The Cross

The Cross

Text:

Colossians 2:6-23

Memory Verse:

Galatians 2:20

The Cross and its meaning gives Christianity its identity over and against other social or religious philosophies… neglect it, exclude it, and we are back to man – centred natural religion, whether in the form of popular folk religion or liberal churchmanship – having the form of godliness but denying the power thereof.

‎Christ made available to us through His death on the Cross, not only the ‎forgiveness of sins, but also victory over the power of sin in our lives. As a result, we can ‎then exchange all that we inherited as ‎Adam’s children’ for the beauty of Christ’s ‎life. One of Jesus’ last words was ”It is ‎finished.” God’s plan for man’s total salvation through the Cross was completed! Therefore, the cross became an instrument made for the purpose of terminating life that is no longer desired or considered worthy to live. Our flesh is cursed and irredeemable and only fit to be crucified.

‎When a man is crucified, he is dead and no longer available or responsive to the people and things he used to relate with. Thus, death on the cross liberates a man ‎from his past history of sin, defeat, frustration, bondage, etc. Nevertheless, ‎that is not the end of life! He can now live ‎an entirely new life inside the same old ‎house (body) that was hosting his old, accursed and now terminated life: ”I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the ‎faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

POWER OF THE CROSS

‎1. Atonement for sin – Hebrews 9:12-14, 22
‎2. Breaking of curses and salvation for the gentiles – Galatians 3:13-14
‎3. Death of the sin nature – 1 Peter 2:24, Romans 6:6
‎4. Access to the Father – Ephesians 2:11-19, Mark 15:37-38
‎5. Introduction of a new covenant – Hebrews 9:15-17, 28; Colossians 2:14,16-17 (AMP)
‎6. Victory over the power of darkness – Colossians 2:15
