As humans, we are designed with a multitude of emotions, passions, and desires, which have tendencies to get out of control if not properly managed. These things must all be brought under control, or they will end up controlling us. Apart from the fact that the Bible requires believers to have self-control, the out of control and over-indulgent nature of our society calls for the correction that comes through this fruit of the spirit. Building self control is a rigorous process as described by Paul in 1 Cor 9:27 (AMP) But [like a boxer] I buffet my body [handle it roughly, discipline it by hardships] and subdue it. It involves practice, deprivation, patience, and dedication. Self does not have the capacity to do these things because lasting self-control is not just a product of willpower or self-determination. Romans 7:18 (MSG) makes that very clear. I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. It takes a power greater than self to exercise lasting control. This power stems from our communion with God, His Word and the Holy Spirit.

HOW TO BUILD SELF-CONTROL

1. Offer your body to God – Rom 12:1-2, Rom 6:12-16
2. Guard the gates of your heart – Prov 4:23
a – Your eyes- Read and watch right – Job 31:1, Psalm 101:3
b – Your tongue-Speak right – James 3:2 TPT
c – Your Ears Listen right 2 Tim 4:3-4
3. Think right – Phil 2:5, Phil 4:8, 2 Cor 10:5
4. Develop the chain of virtues – 2Peter 1:5-7
